What: Skin Genie Golden Unicorn Peel-Off Mask

Hi, today I'll be dishing the deets about Skin Genie's Golden Unicorn Peel-Off Mask. This mask got my attention when it was first launched late last year. I mean, who doesn't wanna look like a golden unicorn? Haha, but seriously, this genuinely got me curious. I don't think I've seen a local brand doing peel off masks - let alone a golden one - so I'm really excited to try this.

About The Golden Unicorn Mask

Skin Genie Golden Unicorn Peel-Off Mask Review
how it looks like from the front and back
The product has five claims written on the front namely: (1) Brightening, (2) Antiwrinkle, (3) Lightening spots, (4) Pulling out dead skin cells, and (5) Unclogging pores.

Ingredients:
Pure Water, Glycerin, Polyvinyl Alcohol, Lonicera Japonica (Honeysuckle) Extract, Sophora Angustifolia Root Extract, Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel) Extract, Glycyrrhiza Glabra (Liquorice) Extract, Hippophae rhamnoides (Sea Buckthorn) Extract, Magic Golden Silver Mineral, Phenoxyethanol, Fragrance Oil

Water acts as a solvent, Glycerin is for moisture, Polyvinyl Alcohol is the film-forming ingredient (the thing you peel off) and I assume the 5 plant extracts are there to help us achieve the claims mentioned above. Phenoxyethanol is a preservative and "Magic Golden Silver Mineral" is obviously the gold/silver thingy that will make us look like a unicorn.

This product is available in two sizes: the 50-ml tube is sold for 350 pesos while the larger 100-ml tube retails for 450 pesos. I was lucky to score mine through Skin Genie's limited Holiday Box

First Impressions

Skin Genie Golden Unicorn Peel-Off Mask Review
The product came like this. The tube was sealed with plastic.
I got this early January but I have to curb my enthusiasm to open it because I have a lot of half-empty tubes of mask products lying around. I just started using this recently and this sat in my storage for more than 6 months - probably the reason why when I first tried it, the mask looks like this:

the mask is clear instead of the expected gold

against a light source
I held it up against a light source and it looks like the gold/silver shimmers settled to the bottom. The mask is thick so shaking it like a maracas won't be able to blend the mask. I have to insert a clean, unused barbecue stick inside the tube to mix it up. If your Golden Unicorn mask is clear, you probably need to stir it too.

"gold" mask vs clear, unshaken mask
After mixing, the mask got way more shimmery and opaque. It doesn't really look golden, it looks more pearlescent silver to me.

So, now about my experience...

selfie time - no golden unicorns here lol
I've tried this 4 times and one thing is for sure - secure all your hair! This stuff high-key smells like glue and it is very sticky... like glue! Keep it away from your hairline and eyebrows. If some of your hair got stuck in the mask, untangle it immediately or else, prepare to say goodbye, haha.

The mask is easy to spread and drying time is within 10-15 minutes; it depends on the thickness you applied. I recommend applying it thickly and evenly so it will be easier to remove after it dries.

my first time using this mask
The mask dries without feeling tight. I wrinkled my forehead, scrunched my nose, and did stuff like that to test its durability and it formed crinkles on the already dry mask. As much as possible, I recommend not moving too much because the crinkles left an imprint on my face. Oops.

Pain level? This is one of the most painful masks I've tried. During the first time I tried this, I peeled it off carefully and slowly starting from the edges. It hurt a lot and the pain was too much for me to handle. It feels like I'm ripping off my face.

Low-cost Santa Claus cosplay.
Just kidding. I have to take a break from peeling it off, lol.
Not exaggerating here. I have to take a break and take deep breaths before I could continue (see pic above haha). I removed the tiny little bits left by using a damp towel.

I tried the mask again after a few days and, after it dried, I just ripped it off without thinking. That proved to be so much better! The pain was not as severe compared my previous experience. So, lesson learned: for a less painful experience, rip it off fast in just one go!

Was the pain worth it?

Remember the claims? Can't say much about its anti-wrinkle and spot lightening properties (I feel like those problems need more time) but I think it did good in fulfilling most of its promises.

My skin looks matte and brighter while my pores do look smaller! I think it needs more moisture but my skin feels very smooth nonetheless. I have some flaky patches on my cheeks and this mask managed to remove those dead skin cells. It's a double-edged sword because it also ripped off a scab from a healing pimple. Be warned!

I've seen some people say this is good for pulling off blackheads and whiteheads. I can't vouch for it since closed comedones/bumps are more my problem. My "unicorn shedding" looks fairly clean and I don't see plugs on the peeled mask.

Is this product worth it?

I have used this mask exactly 4 times and more than half the tube is already gone. I estimate there's about 3-4 uses left. That's about 7-8 uses per tube and if you calculate it based on the 50-ml price, it will be 43-50 pesos per use. That's a bit pricey for me.

Final Thoughts

I don't think I've seen a local brand do peel-off masks so kudos to Skin Genie for tackling this area. That said, they still need to improve a lot. I'm just gonna leave a summary of its pros and cons here and let you decide.

Pros:
1) The mask looks cool (even if it's not gold like its name)
2) Dries fast.
3) Peels off easily.
3) Actually delivered most its claims (brighter, smoother skin; clean, smaller pores).

Cons:
1) Unstable formula - the shimmers would settle to the bottom after a while.
2) Chemical scent - it smells like glue.
3) You have to use a lot, or else, it will be difficult to remove.
4) Painful - not for those who have sensitive skin
5) Expensive - the 50-ml tube is good enough for only 7-8 uses.

Have you tried this? What are your thoughts and how's your experience? Let me know!
