B&Soap Fun Block Shampoo Bar Review

What: B&SOAP Fun Block Shampoo Bar
Price and Where to Buy It: Php320 at Althea PH
In this review, we're gonna be examining B&SOAP Fun Block Shampoo Bar. I got my own from Althea's Skinfood Box. Read my unboxing and first impressions of the beauty box here. :) I have already finished this shampoo bar so continue reading to see whether I like it or not!

The shampoo came in this cute little box. I like the bright colors in contrast with the black matte background.
I am new to Korean skincare and only know mainstream K-beauty brands. I'm not familiar with the brand so, of course, I did a little research. Apparently, B&Soap is an earth-loving brand that only uses natural ingredients and materials that are less harmful for the skin and for the environment. Their products are all handmade and are not tested on animals. Their tagline is "Beautiful earth, Beautiful you." As an animal-lover and as an environment-conscious person, that's really great to hear!

Hair Check

yours truly hahaha
Before I proceed, this is the state of my hair just a couple of days prior to using Fun Block. I have very thin, very fine slightly wavy hair that is prone to frizz. To fight the frizz, I usually have my hair rebonded at least once a year. However, I stopped getting rebond treatments more than a year ago in order to grow out my virgin hair. You can see the unruly black hair growing out on top of my head in the pic above.

My go-to haircare is a keratin shampoo and conditioner from a well-known brand. Aside from that, I don't really use other hair products which is why I'm puzzled because recently, my scalp got very itchy and flakey. When I tested this shampoo bar, I decided to fully commit and ditch everything else. I just used the Fun Block alone and nothing else. Note that you can still use conditioners, serums, hair vinegar, etc... but during the duration of this test, I just chose not to.

First Impressions

The shampoo bar is wrapped in cling wrap. It is a very bright cheerful yellow in color.
The bar is supposed to have one curved side. Mine is cut straight on all sides. Perhaps a factory defect?

The lemon scent is the first thing you'll notice before you even take off the cling wrap. Trust me, it is very strong! I love lemons so I don't mind but other people may find it overpowering. My sister said it smells like dishwashing liquid except the scent lingers in the bathroom for a whole day. Rude! Hahaha! I have to acknowledge it though because what she said is somewhat true. The shampoo bar itself is firm but not excessively hard and tough. I was able to cut the bar in two using only dental floss.

Directions for Use:

  1. Wet your hair with lukewarm water.
  2. Rub your hair with the shampoo bar.
  3. Massage gently with the tip of your finger.
  4. Wash it away with lukewarm water.
  5. Use conditioner after.

There is a note in Althea's Fun Block product page saying hair can be stiff after using the shampoo bar. "This doesn’t mean that the bar damaged your hair. It means that your hair is very damaged before using the bar." Alright, noted. Let's get it on!

My Shampoo Experience

The shampoo bar in action
The instructions say we should wet the hair and rinse off the shampoo with lukewarm water. I didn't bother and just used normal tap water.

There were warnings saying the shampoo won't have a lot of suds because of less sulfates. I didn't have that issue. It was actually easy to make bubbles with the bar and spread it throughout my hair. After massaging my scalp, I rinsed it all off. The lemon scent is not too strong once in the hair but it is still very aromatic. The scent faded after a few hours but I can still catch a whiff of it every now and then even at the end of the day.

The first few washes using this shampoo bar were the worst. My hair felt really rough, like everything was stripped off. It was also very hard to comb. I guess that's the soap working its magic. All product buildup was actually gone.

My hair & scalp went through a week-long transition period where my hair got very greasy
After a week, my hair adjusted to the shampoo. My hair would still feel stiff after rinsing off the shampoo but after air drying, it would feel soft and smooth. I also noticed that instead of flying in every direction, my hair would just stay put. I don't know how else to describe it.

A downside of using this shampoo bar is the wax residue. Since I'm not using any other hair products, I brush my hair to fully distribute the oils from my scalp. After a few minutes, I noticed little white flecks in my brush. At first, I thought it was dandruff but after searching and reading some reviews, I realized it was wax! I guess it's what makes my hair stay still. It doesn't make my hair heavy but it weighs down my hair strands enough so it wouldn't frizz. If you have curly hair, this product may not be for you.

Results

I used the shampoo daily and the whole bar lasted me for exactly 30 days. This is what my hair looked like after my last shampoo:
I'm not kidding when I say my hair is very thin and fine.
No photo effects aside from cropping and zooming!
I think my hair looks soft and smooth.
I still experience stiffness in hair but it wasn't as severe as before. Like I said, after my hair dries, my hair would be very soft and silky to the touch. I admit my hair doesn't look shiny but this is expected. B&Soap said shiny hair would show up after 1-2 months of continuous use.

Will I Repurchase?

Yes! This is the first time I tried a more natural hair product and except for the wax buildup, I like it. I will obviously try other brands to know my other options but as my first shampoo bar, this will set the standard.

I think this product has lots of potential. The start was rough but eventually, it made my hair soft and smooth. My hair is silkier and healthier! I recommend this to people who are looking for a more natural, organic, and environment-friendly hair product, especially if you have thin, fine hair like me. Just remember to be patient because the results will take a few months to show up.
